SPROUTS

Following the Living Foods Lifestyle Program, which includes eating various grasses and greens particularly sprouting and blending them can help the body restore, rebuild, and strengthen the immune system . The program basically consists of grains, seeds, sprouts , and grains. The program has most of the necessary enzymes, vitamins, proteins, minerals , carbohydrates and fats needed by the body in a balanced form. Sprouts can be grown indoors and cost pennies per serving. Sprouts have high levels of all vitamins, minerals, proteins and enzymes. They provide quick energy because they change proteins, fats and starches into amino-acids, fatty acids and simple sugars are readily assimilated, even by a person with a weak digestive system. Sprouts contain lots of chlorophyll which helps cleanse the blood and rejuvenate new cells. The now deceasede, Dr. Ann Wigmore spent her life teaching and researching the LIVING FOODS LIFESTYLE . She founded the HIPPOCRATES HEALTH INSTITUTE in Boston, Mass to share her "Living Foods" program with the world. Dr. Ann’s program has grown rapidly and centers have been established around the world .She believed that the body will heal itself of any illness when it is given"LIVING FOODS NOURISHMENT " .Sprouts , a staple food, played an important part in her program.

Sprouts come from seeds which are dormant. The seed has a protective layer of "enzyme inhibitors " which keep the seed in a state of dormancy thereby sealing them off from the environment until such a time as it is exposed to water or moisture. When moisture is added to the seed "enzyme inhibitors" are released and the seed begins to srout. It is important to use organically grown seed as they do not contain high levels of pestercides and chemicals.

METHOD FOR GROWING SPROUTS IN A GALLON JAR

  1. Place seed into a gallon ( or smaller) jar and soak the seed in filtered water.

4-6 hours for small seed ( alfalfa, etc)

6-8 hours for larger seeds ( sunflower, fenugreek, etc)

1-12 hours for beans, nuts, and grains ( almonds, wheat, mung, lenttils)

Note: Chick peas should be rinsed after 12 hours and soaked for a second 12 hours.

Fasten a nylons, or plastic screen to the top of the jar with an elastic ( screening available at your local Hardware Store in 1 yard sheets)

  2. Rinse twice a day
  3. Drain off water and turn upside down to allow excess water to drain
  4. For peas, lentils, and mung, allow only a short tail to develop (seed becomes bitter if sprouted too long)
  5. 5. For the long sprouts ( alfalfa, fenugreek, radish) place jar into the sun after 4 days to make chlorophyll
  6. When sprouts are completed, remove hulls by placing them in a sink of cold water and gently swirling them around. The huls will fall to the bottom of the sink. It takes about 7 to 9 days for leafy sprouts to reach a good size. ( Wigmore , Anne. Be Your Own Healer . 1992 .)
